Impostor Syndrome
I am familiar with impostor syndrome, as it is a common experience among software engineers, including myself. In case you are unfamiliar with the concept, here is the description:
Impostor syndrome refers to a psychological pattern where individuals doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent fear of being exposed as frauds, despite evidence of their competence. People experiencing impostor syndrome often believe that they are not truly deserving of their success, attributing it to luck or external factors rather than their own abilities. They feel like they have fooled others into thinking they are competent, and they constantly worry about being “found out” as inadequate or incompetent. Impostor syndrome can lead to feelings of anxiety, self-doubt, and a lack of self-confidence, making it difficult for individuals to internalize their achievements and acknowledge their true capabilities. It can affect people across various domains, including academics, professionals, artists, and performers.
